About the neighborhood
Sofia's university quarter and 24-hour nightlife
Studentski Grad — literally 'Student City' — is Sofia's university quarter, built up in the 1960s and 1970s as planned housing for the largest concentration of higher-education institutions in Bulgaria. Sofia University, the Technical University, the University of Architecture and a dozen other faculties cluster here, giving the district a population that skews young, restless and politically engaged. The architecture is mostly socialist-era prefab, but the cafés, bookshops and small bars that have sprung up around them are anything but. After dark, Studentski is one of the loudest and most unapologetic nightlife districts in Sofia — student bars, live-music venues and 24-hour fast food running until dawn. By day, it's where you'll find the best cheap food in the capital, the most interesting independent bookshops, and the kind of scruffy, opinionated café culture that gives any university quarter its character.
